Chic, cosmopolitan Village East is a buzzy restaurant situated in the edgy Bermondsey area of London. Rugged beams and polished concrete mingle with stylish lighting and curvy white seating to add an air of urbane bonhomie to the interior, enlivened by the exuberant mood of the open kitchen. The inventive, eclectic European-led cooking includes charred poussin with chermoula spices or roast halibut fillet with parsley, tomato and mussel compote, accompanied by a well-chosen wine list and classic cocktails served at the bar.

We booked as part of the London Restaurant Festival 2011 and I was told we had to be out by 8.15pm as there were other diners after us. Not a problem - our booking was for 6.30 It's in an interesting part of Bermondsey that definitely warrants further explorations. The food was great, the service was good, the wallpaper in the toilets is amusing. We ordered 3 courses and didn't feel at all rushed. In fact we didn't leave until after 8.30. An excellent evening.

The restaurant itself was set out nice but the quantity of the food and the pricing put us off, we always had to ask the staff for things they never came to us independently and they put us on a table that wobbled.

We visited Village East during the Restaurant Festival and it lived up to - and exceeded - our expectations. We'd had the restaurant recommended to us by several people, so decided to give it a try. The bartender was great - very helpful and knowledgeable. Our waitress had the right combination of friendliness and helpfulness, and the food was elegant and surprising in its simplicity.

My boyfriend and I had a great evening here. We had an early dinner - 3 courses with wine. Both my rabbit ballotine and his lamb sweetbread starters were divine and followed by equally delicious mains of roast partridge and pan fried mallard. The brocolli with almonds and chilli is a winner. My dessert of spiced pineapple was a little light on the actually fruit and heavy on the marscapone but a small hiccup in an otherwise delicious evening.
