Amazing food and fantastic service we dined at Tom Kitchens on Friday night and I can honestly say we enjoyed the food more at Le Rou Fu! If your in Edinburgh this place is a must ??????

    Excellent service and delicious dishes. The sea scallops appetizer was incredible. Cooked to perfection. For our main dishes we had the salmon and steak. Both were surprisingly large portions and again delicious. Overall it was a great experience with a wonderful waitress who was attentive and friendly. Would highly recommend Le Roi Fou to anyone looking for a romantic dinner or simply excellent food.

    Encouraged by a very positive initial visit to Le Roi Fou a few months ago, we booked Le Roi Fou as a group of four friends who are all keen on high quality food and wine- we were not disappointed in the slightest. On the menu was a wonderful selection of ingredients that included a number of items which, sadly, one doesn't encounter very often- calf liver, octopus, foie gras. Everything we chose was well executed and absolutely delicious- of particular note was the quality of the sauces which left us in no doubt that the Chef is a extremely capable classic cook. Portions are generous. The sommelier helped us select two wines which matched our food very well, a classic Pouilly Fume and a far lesser known Moroccan red which had a lovely story to accompany it. Service was attentive without being overbearing and we enjoyed a very pleasant evening indeed. Would return without hesitation and we'd go as far to say we'd actively seek another occassion to do so!

    Every part of our meal was perfect! The staff, including Chef Henry, were attentive and helpful, from providing advice on food/wine pairings to explaining our menu options. We spent nearly three easy hours working our way through the menu, from amuse-bouche and appetizers (oh, that fois gras!) to main courses, through cheese course, dessert, and finally, digestif. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and comfortable. My husband and I agreed that this is the best meal we've ever have, perfect for celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary.

    Le Roi Fou serves some of the best and most imaginative food in Edinburgh - which is a fairly crowded market in terms of gastronomy. We have eaten there several times and are always impressed with the interesting and seasonal menus, the stability of the waiting staff (the same waiter and sommelier each time, which shows real dedication) and the quality of the food. The sommelier is a real enthusiast, knows everything about all his wines and helps to make some great selections. The prices are very fair, with amuse-bouches and petit fours included.

    It's got that rare quality of being right in a city centre but feeling like a neighbourhood or country restaurant. Food is terrific - high quality ingredients and careful preparation: it doesn't try too hard to impress, and everything is cooked superbly, not just the grouse but also a venison casserole. The wine list is eclectic, extensive in range and just the right length. Service is friendly and considerate. The prices are right.

    10/10. Thoroughly enjoyed my first dinner at Le Roi Fou and will certainly be back. The food was delicious - particularly the Guinea fowl from the pre theatre menu. The wine which the sommelier suggested was also excellent. Service was expectional - all the staff were very friendly.

    I thoroughly enjoyed my steak tartare and venison stew.
    My wife ordered the salmon as a main course. She specifically informed the waitress that she preferred it well cooked with crisply skin.
    It arrived undercooked to her taste.
    My wife requested it to be cooked further.
    It was sent back to the kitchen and we were eventually informed that a fresh piece would be prepared.
    Meanwhile my venison stew had been brought to the table with no suggestion that it be taken back to the kitchen and be re-presented alongwith my wife’s fresh dish.
    I was eating my way through the stew when the second piece of salmon came up.
    The skin on this appeared blackened and charred and the salmon flesh itself quite dry.
    My wife being hungry, ate it and when the waitress inquired if it was OK, said “yes”.
    The time taken to present the second piece of salmon seemed over long as the five guest on tables near us had eaten at least two courses of their “tasting menu plus wine pairing” menu selection.
    I had virtually finished my stew by this time.
    I don’t doubt the chef’s/restaurant’s proficiency at preparing items on the menu, but I don’t think that Anton Mossiman himself would have sent that second piece of salmon out in that state on preparedness.
    (I have eaten at Mossiman’s in Belgravia and at the Belfry).
    Also, we finished our first bottle of still water and requested a second.
    The first empty bottle remained on our table until our dessert plates were cleared.
    Also, we shared the plumb and peanut crumble.
    Although the waitress brought two spoons and set the dish in the centre of the table, we had to call her back to request two small plates to divide up the pudding between us.
    (Both small details, but important in good restaurant service to encourage patrons to return.)
