Inside a snug 17th-century building with crackling log fires and exposed beams, The St John's Chop House showcases the finest succulent steaks and chops alongside carefully chosen local ales and an extensive wine list.
The finest cuts of meat feature on the St John's Chop House menu, ranging from classics like sirloin, through to 10oz delmonico steak, or juicy pork t-bone, all served with signature coleslaw and other indulgent sides. There are Chop House sausages, confit duck leg, and seafood recipes like coley fillet with spiced crab cake. As well as light bites like haggis fritters with beetroot and whisky mayonnaise, there are also vegetarian delicacies such as vegetable and walnut bake wellington.
Indulgent desserts at The St John's Chop House Cambridge include elderflower and whiskey jelly with champagne sorbet, and the classic option of sticky toffee pudding. Local ales are championed, as well as British lager and cider, while the wine list focuses on the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France.
Also serving gluten-free, dairy-free and children's menus, The St John's Chop House is rich in British dining tradition, and sits 12 minutes' walk from Cambridge Rail Station.

St. John's Chop house is a fantastic venue. We ate on Saturday night before going to theatre so time was tight and fortunately service was swift and quite professional. Unfortunately I was slightly under-awed by the food. The steaks were good quality but accompanied by rather sad looking chips which taster a bit better than they looked but nonetheless looked a bit like oven variety. Considering the price I expected something that looked a bit better. 2 of us had the venison which was served with a gravy that was too thick and gelatinous. The veggies were flavovoured with star anise which was clever but probably slightly over powering. The venison was braised and rather lacking in flavour and a little dry for me. We ordered 2 bottles of red wine with the meal which were both good. I do think that French red should be decanted at the table by the waitress; the wine nearly always has sediment which can left safely in the bottle. We were very tight for time and the restaurant managed to get 4 desserts for us in super quick time which was much appreciated.

Very good lamb rump
Intrusive music through speakers and no chance of turning volume down although we were the only table occupied in our section of the restaurant

Pleasant friendly service.Main courses, veal chop and haunch venison, v good. Desserts good (Eton mess, burnt cream). Potted rabbit starter v disappointing, rather tasteless, too much butter and not enough rabbit, not good value for money . Sweetbreads starter good however.

The service and the food were excellent. My partner and I both had steak and they were both juicy and delicious. We also shared a plate of haggis meatballs as a side order. These were very good too. The waitresses were charming and attentive but not overbearing. Overall, a very enjoyable experience. Thank you

This was our 4th (and last) visit to the Chop House. All previous visits have been fine but this time the service and food were not up to the previous standard. We booked for a Birthday celebration and were very disappointed. One of the party ordered a Sirloin steak (medium rare). The steak that arrived was grey and very overcooked, we sent it back and the next steak came very much the same. When we complained again we were then told that the chef could not cook this type of steak medium rare. We took the offer of an alternative rump steak. This then came cooked very rare indeed. As the rest of the table had already finished sending it back again was not an option, it was left uneaten. We were then told that the extra cost of the rump steak would be waived and a free desert was offered although we did not want anything else. A tip for the Chop House, if the steaks you get delivered are of such poor quality they cannot be cooked medium rare 'Send them back'. If your chef can't cook a steak then get another chef. The offer to waive the extra cost of a slightly more expensive steak was an embarrassment.

Great Roast beef for Sunday lunch, tender beef, seasonal vegetables, delicious rosaries, a crispy Yorkshire pudding and the best gravey...yumm!...friendly and attentive staff but we were cold. We had a table for 2 beside the window which was very draughty despite there being a radiator close by, this had a negative impact on our dining experience, so much so that I'm not sure I would return in the winter months.

This is a fabulous restaurant with excellent food and service and is our favourite Cambridge eatery. Great treat!
