In a building dating to 1680, The Gay Hussar in Soho serves authentic Hungarian cuisine alongside fine Magyar wines. Frequented by leading politicians, journalists, and artists for over 50 years, this historic restaurant is lined with politician caricatures by acclaimed sketcher, Martin Rowson.

The Gay Hassar menu has hardly been altered since opening in 1953. Generously-portioned dishes include the kapros-gombás halgaluska, fish dumplings in a creamy dill and mushroom sauce, served with rice; and the csirkepaprikás galuskával, chicken in a creamy paprika sauce, served with galuska.

Desserts include the delicious dobos torta, a layered gateau with a caramel top. The Gay Hassar in Soho also has an extensive beverage list, including fine Hungarian wines, Tojaji dessert wines and Hungarian liqueurs.

Subtle lighting and plush furnishings add to the welcoming, relaxed atmosphere that this restaurant is so famous for. The Gay Hussar in London is a 5-minute walk from Tottenham Court Road Tube Station.

Meal was good - my husband loved the chicken pancake starter. Fish dumplings also good, although the temperature could have been a little hotter. Paprika chicken OK, duck livers also good. Nice cosy restaurant - very close together tables!

The duck was very tasty and recommended to anyone who enjoys confit.
Hungarian wines on the list are well worth trying.

Great restaurant, great service, great food. A few more vegetarian options and I'd have given it five stars!

We had a 3 course meal each, I tasted everything and they were all delicious. That's 6 items from the menu, pretty impressive.
Wine was great too, if not cheap.

Good value for money. Check out the set menu if you wanna save.

The space itself is not my favourite becaus of the lined up tables on the side but this is in Soho, really common. However the books make it warm and cosy. Plus the corner table left of the entrance is nice and a bit secluded.

The hungarian waiter was super friendly and professional, while we were happy with everyone anyway.

This place have plenty of history, some great Hungarian food. It is a bit pricey but in return you do get the classic excellent and incredibly polite service by mostly Hungarian staff. Its a great way for British people to experience what a traditional old fashioned Hungarian restaurant has to offer in the heart of London.

The usual reliably enjoyable dining experience. As a goose fan I always seem to choose the same main dish; this time I started with the fish terrine which was delicious. My companions had the pickled herring and pork, and the Hungarian sausage and duck. I normally never eat puddings, but the Gay Hussar is the one exception where the cheese pancakes are irresistable.but after the generous main courses we had difficulty in demolishing one portion between 3 of us. The house wine is fine and good value by London standards.
Only criticism was a total absence of staff interested in my arrival, but I can forgive them as I afterwards discovered they had a private party of 25 people upstairs to cope with as well.
I have been coming here since the 1970s and will continue to do so.
