Excellent food. We liked the fact that local producers were highlighted. The roast beef was the best I've eaten out. Customer service was friendly and attentive but not intrusive.

A grade II-listed former farmhouse, The Five Bells Inn is a rustic country pub in the heart of Devon. Dating back to the 16th-century, Five Bells is a beautiful thatched Tudor building with whitewashed walls and a leafy, tranquil garden.

Vintage British character is offset by ultra-modern seasonal cuisine on The Five Bells menu. Pan-fried scallops with cauliflower, cumin and lemon thyme precede chump of Dartmoor lamb with parsnip, rosemary and ramson, while the pub champions a 1-pot cooking method in which whole chickens are pan-roasted and served in the pan at the table for sociable group dining.

Devon pub The Five Bells Inn retains its historic character with chunky Tudor roof beams and a 20th-century bar top. Modern comforts like chic slate flooring and televisions broadcasting live rugby complete the Five Bells interior, whilst the garden is awash with the colour of hanging baskets and pristine flower arrangements.

Country hideaway The Five Bells Inn is a 15-minute drive from junction 28 of the M5, and about half an hour from Exeter.

Lovely traditional cosy pub with a warm & friendly welcome.Locally sourced food and drink- was pleased to see otter ale & wicked wolf gin on offer also a good selection of wine available.Nice relaxed atmosphere with attentive service.Food good- my partner loved his venison starter- unfortunately our main courses could of been a little hotter.

We were sat at 8:30. The time we were booked in.
    The rest went downhill.
It took 40 minutes for us to get bread! We asked twice before it came out.
A table next to us had sat down ten minutes after us and had finished starters before we even had the bread brought out.
On the first attempt of being offered bread we asked for the wine menu...... this never came. After the bread arrived I went to the bar and asked for the wine menu myself.
Some time went by and nobody came to our table to take a drink order after we had read through the wine menu. So again I just went up to the bar and ordered a bottle of red. To which the bar lady brought it to our table. She poured us each a glass which was great.... until we started drinking it. The red wine was cold!!! I went to the bar again, asked if they had another. (Younger waitress served me this time) she explained not only had we originally been given the wrong bottle but they couldn't do anything about it being chilled as the area the wine is stored in is cold???
This painful ordeal resulted in us going an hour with out a drink.

Before we ordered the food we were told about the limited options due to low stock which is fine. Understandable in a restaurant when you are busy that you will run out of items on the menu time to time.

We finally had our starters. Then the waitress came out to apologies but advised us that the hanger steak my friend had ordered would be really small. We could re order another meal or have "3 quid knocked off the steak".

We decided to keep it simple and keep the order as it was.

The whole experience was awful. We usually opt for the jack in the green as we know it and we love it! We actually only chose the five bells because the jack was fully booked. But next time we'll just wait another day for the jack.

The service at the jack is perfect from start to finish but at the five bells it couldn't have been anymore different. Poor from start to finish.

As on previous occasions, the food was top class. There cannot be many places in Devon which offer better value than the Five Bells for such quality food; we've tried quite a few! The surroundings are very pleasant, the service good and we chose a bottle of wine at a keen price.

Really excellent. We were concerned about the change of ownership but had no need to worry as the Five Bells is still one of the top restaurants in East Devon!!! Food, drink and hospitality were of the top order. Both the 'Specials' and the A La Carte dishes were wonderfully prepared and presented. The mussels were truly wonderful!!

A very enjoyable lunch with family celebrating my mother's 84th Birthday from the welcome and helpfulness of the girls behind the bar who searched out a sherry for my mother. The food was excellent, Duck Liver Parfait starter was delicious, Hake perfectly cooked , fish and chips had an excellent batter,. A real treat, with three good cooks as part of our group who were all impressed! We visited on a midweek lunch time which was quiet but we were not pressured to finish our meal and leave which made the whole experience a relaxed meal. The décor is soft, the fires were burning, well spaced tables from other guests, hope to return soon.

Favourite dish: duck scotch egg and crab starter
We asked for very well done steak for my mum, but it came in pink in the middle, it was also very fatty. The staff did take it off the bill
The partridge dish was good in the main, but the Lardo was a little bit dry and could have done with more gravy
    Plaice dish lovely
Red mullet was good, didn't like the very strong flavour of tarragon running through everything and the potatoes
Customer service was great and very attentive/welcoming
    We would come again

We went to the Five Bells to celebrate our 12 years of being together. The welcome was very warm after we ordered our drinks we were offered a seat by the log fire to look at the menu. Nothing was rushed we were shown to our seats another log fire very romantic. We ordered rump steak one medium and one medium rare they were cooked to perfection. My partner proposed to me at the table and the waitress noticed and bought us a glass of champagne and the chef decorated a plate for us a lovely touch. This is a lovely place to eat nothing negative lovely staff very attentive
