The Dungeon Restaurant and The Orangery at Dalhousie Castle sit in a 13th-century fortress on the banks of the River Esk. The fine food from local produce has earned the venue 2 coveted AA Rosettes.

The Dungeon Restaurant menu offers gourmet Scottish and French dishes in the unique setting of the castle’s historic dungeons. The rich ingredients and exquisitely presented creations are befitting of the elaborate location, with dishes that include roast partridge with a purée soubise, served with creamed haricots blancs and pickled girolle mushrooms. Elsewhere on the menu, try loin of pork with crackling and apple and bramble compote, or the aromatic cod with pak choi, smoked mussels and lemongrass sauce. The Orangery offers a more informal alternative, with views of the river and surrounding woodland. The menu is a lighter selection of contemporary Scottish and European dishes, with the same commitment to quality, local ingredients.

Afternoon tea at Dalhousie Castle offers a traditional, sophisticated experience to match the unique setting. Alongside classic finger sandwiches, cakes, shortbread and scones, enjoy a glass of Champagne at one of Scotland’s most impressive dining spots.

Just 8 miles from Edinburgh city centre, Dalhousie Castle in Bonnyrigg is surrounded by idyllic countryside.

We had afternoon tea in the Orangery 20 years to the day we were married at Dalhousie. Absolutely fabulous spread of savoury and sweet treats, and plenty of it. Loved everything, from the ubiquitous cucumber sandwich to the Dundee cake and chocolate delight. Definitely recommend the food and experience. Only letdown was how difficult it had been to book. I must have phoned and left a message 10 times but nobody ever got back to me, so was very frustrating. But the tea made up for it!

Enjoyed the afternoon tea but was disappointed with the disability access. No handrails on stair no lifts and quite a little trip to the area. Very poor. Customer service was very poor, considering I had my oxygen with me. Could have been better.

Afternoon tea was delicious and well presented. Staff very helpful. However, it did not meet expectations regarding access and facilities. I use a wheelchair and ability to access the venue was checked twice, as was toilet facilities. Firstly there is a complete lack of signage on arrival to direct to the right area of the venue. Secondly, the disabled access was up a very steep, narrow, muddy path on the side of a hill with no railing or fence. Given the weather conditions, this made getting in very difficult. Also there is no disabled toilet. We discussed this with the duty manager who advised it was challenging to instal ramps etc as it is an old building (funny how they managed to instal the spa and swimming pool!). But he confirmed that we should not have been advised it was suitable for us.

Our 'experience' was a 4pm afternoon tea on 27th Feb. The food, service and GENERAL ambience were all absolutely fine but the event was rather spoiled by the temperature of the Orangery which was cool to say the least. We had arrived in a sleat-storm, very cold and looking forward to a cosy environment. Unfortunately, the extractor fan right above our heads was sucking out any warmth there might have been, bearing in mind that the structure is entirely made of glass and unlikely to retain much heat in the first place. On a cold Winter's day in Scotland, it is not necessary to purify the air (where it might have been in the days of smoking) and it would have been nice to feel more comfortable during our meal. We appreciate that the staff will not feel temperature in the same way as guests since they are constantly on the move but it is not the same if one is static for the duration and we feel that guests should be given priority. It was a shame that our experience was spoiled in this way.

Afternoon tea and fiz drink were delish. Friendly staff. Beautiful location. Lovely view from The Orangery. Only problem was it was so sunny that sitting in the glass conservatory became slightly uncomfortable as sun in our eyes snuff feeling hot. We opened the window which helped but there was nothing to help shade us from the sunlight. We could see there were brackets where presumably blinds would eventually hang from. We wouldn't want to lose the view so not sure what solution with be. One way blinds? ? But overall we had a lovely time. Thank you.

The afternoon tea was just lovely. The staff were friendly and helpful (they've clearly got recruitment and training right which is refreshing). We had such a relaxing visit, would definitely recommend it (and indeed will go again!).

First time visit to Dalhousie Castle and was most impressed. The high tea served by delightful and helpful staff in the conservatory made our afternoon complete.

We came for afternoon tea and enjoyed the variety of fare presented to us. Everything was lovely and fresh and very tasty. Staff were friendly and attentive and the surroundings of the Orangery were very pleasant.
