Lovely setting and great menu. Very impressed with the bread, gammon, triple cooked chips and Yorkshire pudding, everything else was just very good! The Montepulciano D'Abruzzo is a really good one too.

A transformed coaching inn in the Buckinghamshire town of Amersham, Hawkyns Restaurant at The Crown Inn offers trusty gastro pub fare and a cherry-picked bar stock. Filled with weathered floors and statuesque inglenook fireplaces, the charming dining room leads out onto a quaint cobbled courtyard. A cornerstone of the community, The Crown Inn bakes its own bread, pulls local ales and fires up the Summer Kitchen's coal-fired barbecue when the sun shines.

Warm welcome by friendly and attentive staff. Surprisingly there was no Hawkyns branding anywhere , except on the actual menu. Menu choice is excellent, we found it really difficult to make a decision! The food could not be faulted, we particularly loved the wood pigeon starter, guinea foul main and marshmallow and rhubarb dessert - it really is that difficult to choose a favourite! The only criticism of Hawkyns on the night we went would be the temperature of the restaurant which was a couple of degrees too low. We were OK being seated right next to a radiator but the party next to us asked to be moved to somewhere less draughty. One of the hazards of a very old and therefore not double glazed building on a below zero night outside. We would however thoroughly recommend it and will definitely return. Definite plus points are that the tables in the restaurant are well spaced and the wine is not over priced!

I leave this review as feedback based on the fact that I realise this restaurant has only been opened two weeks and will clearly still have some teething problems. This review is meant to provide constructive feedback in every way and most definitely not negative. Locals are always excited for a new restaurant to open so we wish the owners and staff every success in building a popular and successful dining venue.

Firstly, the room was very cold. There is a definite need for curtains over the large windows and more heating. There is also is a need for a hot air curtain or similar to stop the cold draft blowing into the restaurant when a customer walks in the door of the hotel. The wooden chairs are a very odd design, if you attempt to lean against the back rest your butt slides off the seat! They are quite uncomfortable for relaxed dining as you must lean forward. First thing we both commented on to each other when we sat down.

Both the two entrees and the two main meals were served lukewarm at best on the plate....either there were no heat lamps over the pass in the kitchen yet, or the food was plated too long before serving, or perhaps the kitchen door was open cooling the food down. The time between ordering and receiving entree was far too quick and, although given teaspoons, the staff forgot to serve the amuse bouche and bread that was given to the other tables. The waiting time between entree and main was also far too quick as well, less than 5 minutes after we finished entree.

The food itself was presented well and cooked well. The menu was interesting and varied, British cuisine with a slight modern element. Produce was clearly of excellent quality with the beef and the duck both melting in the mouth (although the tamarind duck was missing the tamarind element which left it quite bland).

This restaurant has great potential and we look forward to trying again in a few months once some of the setup issues are sorted out.

We had a wonderful meal on opening night - we had the tasting menu and thoroughly enjoyed everything that was presented to us! We were presented with a glass of champagne upon arrival which was a lovely touch too. The service was good and the staff were really knowledgeable about the menu and the ingredients etc.
Both Atul Kochhur and Ross Butt came out to the dining room to chat to their customers which was fantastic - both were so down-to-earth and clearly passionate about their new restaurant and the menu: inspirational men and a delight to talk to.

The only thing that I didn't like was the plates and dishes - they made that 'nails down a blackboard' noise/feeling if you caught the cutlery on them! But that is clearly just a personal preference - my husband still scraped every last morsel/drop of sauce/puree/jus from his!

We had the Ham Hock for a starter and Moules for main. Both dishes were very tasty and well presented. The sauce on the Moule was excellent. Service good and staff friendly and efficient. The ambience of the hotel is good, a very old building which has been adapted well with a mix of old & new furniture. Only downside is that tables for two are a little too close together so you are able to hear others conversations - taking at least two of the smaller tables out of the row would make the overall dining experience excellent!

The starter of mussels with Chorizo was the best thing I've eaten in ages.
