Showcasing Italian cuisine from multi-award-winning chef Anthony Demetre, Osteria presents a regularly changing menu of seasonal, regional produce. Look out over Barbican’s iconic lakeside and fountains whilst sipping on classic Italian cocktails and new generation wines.

In the centre of the restaurant find an old meat slicer, and table dedicated to house-made charcuterie. From the Osteria menu, try starters like carpaccio of sea bream, clementine, fennel and chilli, white onion and bread Soup, and buratta with artichokes, carrots and hazelnuts. Elsewhere on the menu, discover homemade pasta dishes such as rigatoni with Sicilian sausage, and ricotta gnudi with endive and apple balsamic dressing. Signature mains include suckling pig with sage potatoes and slow-cooked beef polenta with roast onions, whilst classic desserts of polenta cake with orange marmalade, and zabaione complete the menu.

From the Osteria bar come classic Italian wines and cocktails. Try a traditional negroni or bellini, or sample the wine list which includes an impressive array of bottles from throughout Italy.

Find Osteria London a short walk from both Barbican and Moorgate Tube stations.

Osteria, sadly, is mediocrity personified. With so many exceptional restaurants in London it was a shock to be served such carelessly prepared uninspired food in meagre portions. Our waitress was fine, the front of house woman efficient but not terribly friendly. Osteria in my opinion is rather abusing its position as the 'fine dining' Barbican alternative. Next time I was either buy a sandwich or salad from Benugo stall or return to the simple pleasures of the Barbican Kitchen.

Overall the staff were helpful and polite but we felt that £120 for two with one bottle of the wine was steep in relation to the food and the experience. The food was good - the burrata particularly - but not special. Noone offered to take my coat which lay on the floor next to the table throughout the meal. I ordered cod and cabbage and the cabbage was too bitter to eat and left on the side of the plate, something I mentioned to the waitress but was not addressed. I would like to add that I haven't complained about a restaurant before ie not a serial complainer. On the positive side it was very handy for the theatre - but maybe the restaurant is relying too heavily on this audience.

Food arrived too quickly - felt it had all been pre-prepared. We were in and out within 50 mins, despite having a starter, main course and carafe of wine. Staff were totally disinterested. Great shame as we had been once before and had great hopes.

This is a first rate Italian restaurant. I'm not sure about a menu of negronis; I know they've suddenly become fashionable but I've been drinking Negronis for 50 years. The menu is headed by the negroni classico- that is the negroni I recognise as such. Osteria's was perfect, which is more than I can say for a lot of negronis I've been offered from time to time. The wine list is also commendable- Unfortunately my wife and I can now only manage a glass each, the days when we drank a bottle between us are sadly gone. So the Barolo on offer will have to wait till we come again with others. A pity. But the house Piemonti that we took was most acceptable.
Our antipasti passed every test; it's rare that a melon at such peak of fruition appears on one's plate; t the Parma ham and melon so often dull was here as bright as it should be with clear contrasting tastes of their different sweetnesses.
. My pasta with sausage could not be faulted. My wife, not a woman easy to please, was moved to say that her rabbit would have pleased even her mother- a lady who famously complained about the cream at Lassere.
Alas the dessert did not scale the heights. My peach was a little hard and the ice cream undistinguished. Also the petits fours accompanying the coffee were meagre.
All in all I would grade this an A and we will definitely go again.
One area where Osteria really falls down is the dress of the male waiting staff, Jeans are not really the thing. Nor should a restaurant of this class have bare table tops. There were of course linen serviettes but sadly no linen tablecloths.
finally, there was the distraction of music. At least it was discreet but silence is golden- and it discourages loud talk at other tables.

The restaurant looks great and our table was comfortable and looked good. The service was a little hit and miss, our waitress was very nice but seemed to need a little more training e.g. she waited until we were placing our orders to tell us what was not available/finished which made us waste time. The food was good, my dessert was my favourite - the mango sorbet with yoghurt. I also had the lemon sole which was enjoyable. I think we would have been happier if our first choices from the menu had been available. I loved the Negroni menu and enjoyed trying a new version; Amore Rosa Negroni, very much. Overall a good experience and I will return, just wish the service had been a little faster and clearer.

In a brilliant location in the Barbican, overlooking the fountains we had high hopes. We had already checked out the menu online (of course what we were given was different, but similar), and so were looking forward to it. It started going downhill as soon as we ordered really. Our order of bread and olives was left on the serving counter till we asked for it a second time, the food when it arrived looked great, but peaches in a salad were still crunchy, steak so poorly cooked it was tough and hard to chew. The worst bit really was the service. It was hard to get the attention of any staff. When my drink order was delivered to the next table (they said it wasn't theirs) he refused to give it to me for another 10 minutes! We asked for the bill, and waited 40 minutes before we could find a member of staff to take our money. We were sorely tempted to just walk out, because there was seriously not a single member of staff on the floor. This restaurant is really expensive, has a great location and if it served decent food would be packed. Sadly, it was a huge disappointment.
