Yesterday evening, pre-theatre dinner. Livebait at the Cut used to have distinctively crisp and professional staff. Something has gone wrong. Rather slow and inattentive - then the blackboard special arrived without one key element and a mysterious bowl of broccoli. Turned out they did not have the relevant ingredient, but instead of giving an honest explanation at the time of ordering, they sent broccoli as compensation. Hopeless. A discount on the bill did not make it a good experience.

Early evening dinner for 4. Food was late to arrive, lukewarm and half the order missing. Very disappointing, as I am a firm Livebait fan. Sadly, I will not be returning to this restaurant.

Lunch on a saturday before going to Old Vic; excellent except for 2 minor faults: ordered bottle of prosecco and had to wait because had none and had to get from store; and don't like gratuity being added to bill because that way can't ensure our waitress gets the tip and also to the extent she gets it she pays tax on it.

Went over for an evening meal. STARTERS: Wife had the scallops to start, I had the smoked salmon. Scallops were like eating a mouthful of sand. Every bite was very crunchy, so clearly not properley washed. Could have also had better caramelisation. I had the salmon. It was good quality, but lacked flavour. The skin and brown meat were also left on, and although this isn't really the end of the world, it does look unappetising and who wants flabby old salmon skin. Had to ask for lemons to add kick to the salmon as well as the bland side salad, which was just dressed with oil and not seasoned. MAIN: Wife had sole dressed with cockles. Guess what, cockles were full of grit, just like the scallops. Crunch crunch! Sole was reasonbly cooked, but lacked seasoning and flavour. The lemons I ordered earlier came in handy! I had salt baked sea bass. It certainly wasn't baked as it had grill lines all over it, and was severely overcooked. Dry and tough. Wasn't prepared nicely either, side fins were still attached. A little more care in the prep would go a long way. Unfortunately they don't do themselves any favours in the seafood department, despite being a specialist fish restaurant, but I'm glad to advise that the chips and buttered mash were very tasty, but only once I'd seasoned them myself! VERDICT: Over promised and under delivered. Luckily I was using a voucher otherwise I would have felt extremely cheated if I had have paid the full price!

Booked an early dinner before the theatre (Old Vic). Restaurant quiet when we arrived at 5.30 but pretty busy when we left at 7. Food was excellent, if a little pricey. Delicious potted shrimps, attractively served, as a starter. I had smoked haddock and my husband had a whole sea-bass for our mains and both were excellent. Side dishes of veg both good, with unusual touches (e.g. fine strips of chilli or ginger, or whole capers) which looked and tasted great. One of the best meals out we've had for a good while.

We dined at 6pm for a pre theatre supper. Fish was beautifully fresh and service very attentive. It was a mega hot day and so rather too warm at our table as no air conditioning. Fel the prices were a little on the high side for a fish and chip supper.

Evening meal. Food always fresh, good location for pre and post theatre. Able to accomodate flexible start time due to post theatre timing.
