A restaurant with an esteemed history and multiple awards under its belt, L’Etranger offers a unique fusion of French and Japanese cuisines, and an exquisite wine selection. An award-winning restaurant, L’Etranger has earned over 30 accolades, including an AA award for Best Wine List in the UK 2013.
Signature dishes at L’Etranger in London include the renowned caramelised black cod with miso, as well as the pan-seared Scottish scallops with truffle puree. Elsewhere on the menu, find the likes of tuna spring rolls with ginger and coriander.
Named after Albert Camus’s 1942 work, the restaurant’s interior echoes the Nobel Prize-winner’s minimalist writing style. The restaurant’s passion for wine is evident in their large collection of 1200 bins of fine and prestigious wines which include an extensive French selection, but also bottles from England, Austria, Spain, Greece, Lebanon, Luxembourg and the New World. These can be sampled at L’Etranger’s monthly wine tasting dinners that have been held for the last 14 years.
The restaurant is located in a quiet part of Kensington, just minutes away from some of London’s most iconic attractions. Gloucester Road Tube Station is a 6-minute walk away.

Pleasant atmosphere really enjoyed the starters mains a bit disappointing

A classy little restaurant where we enjoyed an excellent Saturday lunch. A bit odd that we had to ask for the lunch menu having only been handed the a la carte, but otherwise the service was good. Apart from soggy crackling on the pork belly starter, everything else was spot on. Really well presented and generous portions. The desserts in particular were delicious. Will definitely return - the set lunch menu was very good value.

Lovely service . Nice set up. Champagne was good, the Jerusalem artichoke soup was delicious , as was the squid. My truffled chicken was too dry but the seabass with gyoza was tasty.
Lovely Chocolate fondant dessert .

I have to start with, the food was absolutely amazing. I rarely say this, or write reviews, but I was compelled to. I went with a friend and ordered the belly of pork and truffled chicken. Both were great in taste and perfect in quantity. Unfortunately we weren't able to order a dessert due to time constraint, but I am sure they would live up to the expected standard. I would highly recommend trying this place out. It's standard London prices and very easy to book!

Excellent restaurant within 10 minutes walk of Albert Hall. Restaurant opens at 5.30 so plenty of time for a relaxing three course meal before the concert.
Service very good as was the meal which was delicious.

I chose L'étranger at random really. It was my first experience. We were warmly welcomed by the French sommelier (we spoke in French). They had a private party so we were taken to the wine room where they just had two tables. Very nice atmosphere except that it was spoiled by loud and unrefined music (what I would call musak). We politely asked if it could be toned down. The director (maître de ?) pretended to do it but nothing changed. It was really annoying and clashed with the refinement of the food. We took the tasting menu (£65) which was (too) rich and featured some amazing dishes as the cauliflower porridge and scallops or a delicious codfish cooked à la japonaise with rice and teriaki sauce, excellent. When the meat dish arrived (welsh lamb and ratatouille) we already had eaten our fill and we hardly touched it. Overall, the food was very good and the wine list impressive. Unfortunately we could not afford most of the wines but the sommelier suggested two glasses of excellent côtes du Rhône (white) and Montagne St Emilion (red). The restaurant is named after Albert Camus' famous novel and the surprise was... in the toilets. You can listen to the recording of the novel. What a delightful surprise. The service was caring and professional. On the other hand we could not but notice the ruthless manners of the director who is obviously out of place in a restaurant of this class. I will come back en enjoy more of the delicious wines on the list.
