Hidden away is this gem of a restaurant, a little Thailand under the bridge by the canals of Birmingham. When you enter the Kinnaree Thai, you enter a world of calm. Tranquil surroundings and attentive staff could lead you to believe that you have been transported to an island far away from Birmingham City Centre. With a long glass frontage that makes the most of its canalside setting, Kinnaree Thai is a tranquil restaurant situated behind the Mail Box in central Birmingham. Elegantly adorned with Thai artefacts, including a traditional longboat as a centre-piece, this spacious dining room offers over 100 traditional Thai dishes in home-cooked style, with a selection of five set menus as well. When visiting this fabulous restaurant allow time to relax and enjoy the Thai experience. The food is superb and reasonably priced; whether you make your own selection or ask the staff for their recommendations you will not be disappointed. We have been highly commended in the Taste of England Excellence in Tourism Awards 2007.

I've heard really good stories about this restaurant in the past from colleagues and decided to take my lovely wife here for our anniversary. To start with they serve my favourite beers (Chang & Singha) and the service from the start was great. We ordered the set meal for two, with traditional starters, followed by soup, then a choice of three dishes (including a very hot prawn dish which was awesome (I can't remember the name)! My wife had never eaten Thai and felt most of the dishes weren't for her as she doesn't enjoy spicy food, but that's her fault ;) There was enough for her to choose from though!Overall we had a lovely evening, and even though we felt it was *slightly* over priced ([$] including service charge for two people), as a special night out it was great. We just couldn't afford to do it every week!I'd certainly recommended Kinaree.

My partner and I booked our table for 7.30. The restaurant seemed to busy up a little later. Staff gestures were generally good (topping up wine, service was fairly speedy) though when trying to get their attention would mostly walk past us. Tables are very close together, therefore not so good for intimate dining. Presentation of food was great, but taste and texture was a bit rocky- one dip tasted like tomato ketchup with some chilli in it, prawns and squid was very rubbery, and lemon sorbet was served with an egg waffle. The monkfish fillet had lots of bones in which ruined the dish for me. Our bill totted up to over [$]- where we could have eaten for that?!. Prosecco was lovely, but very overpriced!

We ate at 7pm. Service was lovely and quick. Staff were lovely and very traditional in gestures, bows etc. The meal was tasty even though as meat eaters we had to have the vegetarian set menu for 2 because the meat menu contained prawns in 2 dishes. Loved the flavours and variety encouraging my partner who had never ate in a Thai restaurant to try a selection of new dishes. The bottle of prosecco was lovely too if overpriced!!

We ate around 7:30 on a Wednesday. Not too busy but started to get busy later. The meal and it's presentation were fabulous. The staff are all very friendly, helpful and professional. Good value for money.

One member of the group is a very fusy eater but always manages to eat at least two courses at Kinnaree. There is a good variety of food and we like the fact that you are not rushed to eat your meal so that someone else can take your place. It is our favourite place to eat in Birmingham

We enjoyed all aspects of experience. Went on a Busy Saturday night. Food excellent as ever. The only real criticism was that the plentiful number of staff did not sychronise as a team. For a Thai meal in the City Centre it would still be first choice.

We went for a relaxing evening meal. We ordered King prawns, Thai fish cakes and Chicken satay for starters. Chicken satay was good enough. Shop bought frozen prawns tastes better than what we had. Taste & texture of the covering was disappointing. Fish cakes were rubbery and squeaky! Not how a fish cake is meant to be.We had ordered chicken jungle curry- which was overcooked chicken and some vegetables and chillies floating in a brown broth overpowered with fish sauce. The other main, a chef's special of deep fried aubergine was terrible. Aubergines were deep fried in a sweetish thick batter which was very unpalatable. We love Thai food and were really looking forward to some good meal. Won't be going back there anytime soon.

I normally don't post reviews unless the food was exceptionally good or bad. In this case it was bad...very bad.We looked forward to great food as we love Thai Cuisine. The Crispy Tiger Prawns (starters) were like they were from a supermarket frozen food section. Honestly the crispy frozen prawns from [@] look and taste better. The fishcakes we ordered for our son were so felt like one was chewing a rubber eraser. The chicken satay was good, however. The mains were disappointing - deep fried aubergine with vegetables... very pedestrian. The chicken jungle curry ...the chicken was tough like leather. It put me and the rest of the family off Thai food. The bill for 2 adults and small child with 2 glasses of wine was nearly £70.Such a forgettable evening. The place was not full... for a Friday evening.Everything needs to change... quickly..if this place is to survive. [@]at Brindley Place was definitely better and has now been renovated. We might go there again once we feel inclined to try Thai food again.

Rang the restaurant and will thank them for their honesty as they told me that they cook meat and vegetarian food in the same wok... So I'm sure they are ok for non-veggies

Good restaurant . Gave free ice cream birthday surprise . But then added extra [$] service charge on top ! Service could have been £4
