Gidleigh Park is led by Michael Wignall, who has won Michelin stars in every kitchen he has headed since being awarded his first star in 1993. His unique dishes are full of flavour and underpinned by a contemporary, less formal approach to fine cuisine.

    Our afternoon tea was amazing - the cakes were visually exciting and tasted sublime but the scones......straight from the oven and absolutely delicious. The staff were friendly and attentive but not overly so. Location was beautiful so you can guess that we loved it!

    To say that we had been eagerly anticipating our lunch at Gidleigh Park would be an understatement! We had been given a voucher to put towards a meal or stay last year for our joint birthdays by our sons. Unfortunately the booking we made for a year ago had to be cancelled as I was ill, but we rebooked for May this year.
    When we arrived after that extremely delightful if rather hair raising drive from Chagford down the very narrow and twisting approach lane [be brave - it's worth it], we were warmly welcomed and shown to the Lounge with its panoramic view down the valley and to the moor beyond.
    Following a coffee, we were settled in with a drink and copies of the menu. We opted for the 3 course version at £50 per head. We had booked for one o'clock, and just after we were summoned to our table The Dining Room was intimate but uncrowded with I would say 15 covers and our experience over the next 2 and a half hours was unrushed and flowing! Did I say we had booked the three courses? Well we had but by the time one took into consideration the Amuse Bouche and variety of Entre Plats, we must have had virtually the full Tasting menu. Quite quite delicious.
    For our Starters - by the way after about four different 'tantalisers' - we had the Octopus and the Red Mullet. Absolute perfection. The main Course was the Lamb with exciting vegetables the like of which we had certainly not experienced before. Equally delicious. The Dessert was a Symphony of flavours based on Strawberries - my wife's, and Rhubarb - mine. However, the entre plat before the dessert was served was the show stopper as far as I was concerned! A mango manifestation of magic in a many varied format of Ices, creams and cubes ... quite quite breathtakingly delicious.
    The service was impeccable under the expert tutelage of Maitre Domo; the food quite quite delicious from the recently appointed executive Chef Michael Wigsall and the ambience unhurried and comfortable.
    Save your pennies and go!

    Superb service from all staff - who were welcoming, helpful, knowledgeable and nothing was too much trouble. The attention to detail was superlative and the food was wondrous. From roe deer to snickers a taste sensation. We booked for the experience and what we got was certainly memorable.

    Gidleigh used to be our fave restaurant, great place to stay, amazing food and drink, tremendous service.....and now, change of chef, abysmal food, terrible service, what have they done? just a massive change for the worse.

    From the initial welcome to the final farewell we were looked after fully.
    The food was excellent as was the way all dishes were presented. Each dish was gently explained in order that we had the best from the taste.

    Food was as usual brilliantly executed in terms of both taste and presentation, although the vanilla with the fish dish for us, seemed a little misplaced!

    Front of house & service was ok, but lacked enthusiasm & polish.

    Drinks were lovely, although the white wine was a little warm & the sommelier could have been more informative.

    We finished with coffee & petit fours, but sadly this was disappointing. The coffee was very weak and we asked for warm milk and received cold... The petit fours were 3 small deserts and not the hand made chocolates of old.

    In addition we were told we couldn't use the lounge as there was a guest champagne tasting going on, so we ended up in a rather cool conservatory!

    3 course lunch at £223 for 2 isn't cheap and we believe the value, service, quality and experience fell short on this occasion. But hasn't deterred us from going back when when Gidleigh's new Chef Michael Wignall is st the helm!
