A short stroll away from London’s Charing Cross, Trafalgar Square & Covent Garden, the Coal Hole serves classic British pub food in a welcoming, warm environment. Rumour has it the pub occupies what was once the Savoy Hotel’s coal cellar; in Edwardian times, Gilbert & Sullivan regularly performed on the premises.

With Nicholson’s pubs first established in 1873, the fleet has become synonymous with warm hospitality, hearty pub food and a speciality stock of ales. Constantly-featuring recipes are bolstered by a seasonally-changing range of specials on the Nicholson’s menu, with favourites including home-breaded chicken Kiev, or a sharing cottage pie. Also enjoy old-school desserts and nourishing breakfasts.

At the Nicholson’s bar, expect to find 25 guest ales changing with the seasons, a resident cask master, and carefully-matched ale and food pairing suggestions. Compiled with equal care, the Coal Hole drinks list features easy drinking wines, artisan soft drinks and classic cocktail mixes.

The Coal Hole on the Strand is a 9-minute walk from Temple Tube Station.

Meal was OK. Expensive for what it was, but was London. Meal wasn't particularly hot either, but did not have time to complain as were in a hurry. Waitress was working hard but did have to wait for bill. Atmosphere was good. Would probably not recommend, but average.

Friendly attentive staff and prompt service in this beautiful old pub. As a party of 8 we were placed downstairs in the St Edmunds Dining room which was a little quieter than the main pub and made conversations easier.
Menu provided something for everyone; gastropub fare, well presented and good value for C. London we thought.

Unfortunately when we visited on Wednesday the service was very slow. We had an OK meal but not brilliant.

We had previously been to The Wellington, another Nicholsons pub and the food and service was better. We were disappointed as the pub/restaurant is close to the Savoy. I had previously met for drinks at the Coal Hole and perhaps this is the best option. I am not criticisng the staff as they were quite friendly.

Amazing place, not somewhere you would possibly walk in off the street as it looked like a London Pub and we were a bit shocked when we walked in. My Husband was worried what I had booked. On arrival we were led downstairs to a quiet Romantic setting, where we were greeted well and placed in a very private corner as it was our first Honeymoon meal.
The food was a really reasonable price and we had 3 courses. They didn't scrimp on the portion sizes and it tasted amazing. Bubble and Squeak is highly recommended along with the perfectly cooked Sea bass. I felt like I had found a hidden gem, that wasn't frequented by all of the tourists in London.
Well done to the staff and the Chef, we will be returning for good food and good service along with a good memory of our honeymoon.

We enjoyed the meal, nice atmosphere and good service. Very handy location as we were going to see a show at the Savoy.

The Coal Hole is well situated just a short walk from Charing Cross Station. The atmosphere in the pub is great. We had booked for Sunday lunch apparently in the restaurant but it was a very strange place downstairs from the main pub. It had no atmosphere and was nearly empty. Consequently we moved back upstairs to the pub area and had a nice lunch. The food was good and reasonably priced.
