We dined here on the evening of their monthly wine dinner. I was not that keen on the wine selections of the day to be honest but the food was absolutely spot-on to compliment the wines. All the dishes were so tasty and matched well with the wine. I especially enjoyed the first course, which comprised of white asparagus, white truffles and cheese, yum! The staff was attentive and friendly too. The only drawback with this restaurant is the seating. High chairs and tables are not particularly comfortable and suitable for a proper 4 course meal and the only alternative is a sofa seat where the table is too low, which makes it even more difficult to eat on.
However, all in all, it was excellent and good value for the money.

Good environment and food was good when it arrived
Service very slow 40 minutes to wait for wine
only 2 people working on the bar and food, took ages to get any food
Expensive Tapas - but good quality wine and food when we got it

Obviously the choice of wines is great, but the food is amazingly creative & good. Try the foie gras burger or the tapenade as a starter.

We had an excellent lunch here. I chose several small plates such as the duck burger, the foie gras croque, which were utterly delicious and swiftly dispatched, and my partner ordered the three course daily special which included a delicate but flavourful sea bream main. We shared the cheese selection and one of the three was an amazing Ossau Irate, cut in the form of a flower. This was an truly remarkable taste sensation, as the very fine 'petals of cheese' literally melted on the tongue. We accompanied the lunch a the very decent and pleasingly floral house Rose (Langlois) and a couple of really hoppy and flavourful craft beers, 3 Weiss Monkeys was one. Our waitress was really charming and very helpful in explaining the rather involved culinary constructions, and all the staff were welcoming yet extremely professional and discreet. The ambience was relaxed but with a frisson of polite formality, as it befits a business lunch clientele. It was also very good value for the quality and service we received. Overall it was a truly delightful experience which we would be happy to repeat.

We went to sample the three-course prix fixe lunch menu as a special offer of the London Restaurant Festival, and it did not disappoint. Although there are some places that offer this kind of dining, they rarely get it this right. The cooking is straight out of the classic French bistro repertoire - I had fishcakes with a sumptuosly green watercress sauce and a perfectly grilled bavette (medium rare on the rare side with no choice in the matter) drizzled with a herb sabayon (read béarnaise). Where most eateries fall down is most certainly dessert, however not the case here again. All the portions were not huge, but in the context of a three-course meal this meant that at the end of the experience I felt satisfied without being stuffed. In a lovely setting just opposite Smithfield Market on a leafy square, Cellar Gascon is an everyday version of the michelin-starred Club next door, delivering excellent value, not to mention an great wine list, as befitting its name. Even without the festival special, two courses of starter and main come in at £9 on their lunch special menu.
Their formula: simple, good cooking, expertly done in a little corner of an open kitchen adjoining a bar and efficiently managed. On our midweek lunch visit, as the Cellar was not full, two people ran the entire operation like a walk in the park. It's a shame I don't work nearby, or perhaps a blessing, as I would probably eat there more often than I would like.

Cellar Gascon is conveniently located 5 minutes from Farringdon Station. The bar itself was undergoing external renovations at the time (scaffolding up everywhere) but we didn't let that put us off. Upon entry, the inside is immaculate: you are faced with a long gallery style bar area, all trendy wooden pendant lights & large white swivel bar stools. Just lovely. The seating was comfortable throughout, and as we were pushed for time, we had their daily specials for both starters & mains. The starter, a flavoursome terrine with a delicate sauce was delicious. But the star of the show was the main dish that soon arrived: a mouth-watering hake fillet on beetroot quinnoa - the hake was small but so fresh & beautifully cooked, I could easily have had seconds (or thirds). As we couldn't decide which of the desserts to go for, we tried all 3 - my favourite being the crema catalana infused with coffee flavours. Service was excellent throughout: even though it got really busy during the lunchtime period, the staff still made each interaction pleasant yet professional. And to top things off, all their specials are amazingly affordable - 2 courses for under £10 in London! Rare indeed.
Would heartily recommend to anyone wanting a light, delicious, excellent lunch.
