Specialising in trusty, home-cooked British recipes, The Royal menu is made up of time-honoured classics and inventive chef’s specials. The signature beef & ale pie is a creation from much-loved celebrity chef Tom Kerridge, while favourite world flavours include sizzling steak fajitas, or aubergine and roast beetroot curry. Gourmet sandwiches and jacket potatoes are served throughout the day, and guests can round things off with an indulgent crumble, cheesecake or sundae.
The drinks list at The Royal pub features carefully-chosen beers and international wines, and a lengthy list of soft drinks. Younger diners are not forgotten, with a varied menu for both lunch and dinner, and a mini roast served on Sundays.

Suitable table found for our group of 7 even though they had no record of my confirmed booking through this site. Food was excellent, we all had something different, staff attentive and we all enjoyed our meals. I will use The Cedars again. Local reputation had gone down and I found no reason for that on my visit. Standard is good folks and better than the local hotels I have visited recently.

Not good. It was busy and we think it may have been our waitress's first day - she seemed stressed. We ordered 3 Sunday roasts (2 vegetarian) and one meal off the menu. The menu meal came out before we were told our veggie options were ready, so my mum started eating alone while 3 of us queued at the carvery. The waitress did offer to take Mum's meal back and keep it warm but Mum was worried it would dry out. She did enjoy her fish dish and fortunately she is slow eater so hadn't finished by the time we got back to the table over 20 mins later.
The very loud carvery chef was apologising to everyone for the roast potatoes because they were Aunt Bessie's and he, quite rightly, didn't want anyone to think they were his, however he didn't apologise for his rubbery Yorkshire puddings. He did point out that the gravy was suitable for vegetarians though, which we appreciated and he also, quite rightly, binned what must have been 2lbs of roast beef that was so tough he could no longer get his very sharp carving knife through it. The vegetables all seemed to have been cooked in the same water because the ones that had any taste did not taste like they were supposed to. The cauliflower cheese was quite nice though and our homity pies were tasty. Unfortunately the pastry base of one of them was very soggy.
No-one came to ask us if everything was okay and we didn't call anyone over to say anything because we didn't want to have to wait any longer for replacement meals. After we'd eaten, of course it was too late to complain.
We have enjoyed previous visits to the Cedars but this was the second time we have not and sadly we probably won't return again. I get the impression that when it's busy it's just too much for the kitchen and waiting staff to cope with. Also I do not think you should get frozen roast potatoes or generally poor quality food and service when you are paying almost £10 for a Sunday roast and none of the staff seemed to be very happy.
