Found on Birmingham’s New Street, Café Rouge is a cosy French restaurant with a menu packed with traditional dishes. Café Rouge’s modern exterior, complete with al fresco dining, gives way to an authentic French interior.

As part of the nationwide chain of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.

In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.

Surrounded by high street shops, Café Rouge Birmingham New Street is a 3-minute walk from Birmingham New Street Station.

Early evening prior to a concert Food was average french, good, although the pommes dauphinoise were not good by french standards Our deserts took a long time to arrive; we thought that they had been forgotten

excellent quick prompt service useful as my husband had limited time having escaped from the office for 3/4 hour to have lunch.

Arrived late for table but not a problem. Seemed a bit short staffed. Meal oksy.

We dined at 9.30 p.m. since our train arrived at 9.00. The food was fine. We ordered extra bread but there was sufficient bread with the mussels and the escargots and it would have been helpful if we had been advised of this since we barely touched the extra bread. However this is a minor quibble, we enjoyed the meal.

On entering and confirming we had booked, we were warmly greeted and taken to our reserved table. I had requested a Gluten Free menu on booking and it was handed to me with the main menu. Even though it was a busy Saturday lunchtime, we were not rushed unlike some other restaurants nowadays. The food & wine were excellent as was the service. Cannot fault it at all.

2pm on Friday 28th Jan 2011. What drew us in initially was the set menu, unfortunately the fish main was not available (1st negative). Ordered a bottle of house white which wasn't very pleasant (2nd negative). The menu was limited so settled for 1/2 kilo of mussels, cooked in a tomato and chilli sauce, my partner had steak and fries. Service was prompt. The mussels were cooked ok but the sauce was not good, was not evident that it had been made from cherry tomatoes, appeared more like basic canned tomato soup with salt added (3rd negative). The accompanying baguette was not nice, I guess from a freezer rather than fresh (4th negative). My partners steak appeared, it was not clear how it had been cooked, the fries looked depressing. The highlight of the dining experience was watching the diners at 2 adjacent tables get soaked when a bottle of bubbly was opened incorrectly. All in all a waste of time, disappointing.

We lunched before going to a New Year's Eve Concert and it certainly set the right tone. The starters (fried camembert)were large enough for sharing, the mains were Lemon sole, beautifully cooked. Accompanied by wines by the glass we were set for a good show.
