For over a hundred years, The Cadogan Hotel on Sloane Street has been the epitome of discretion. A little history lesson here...This handsome townhouse was once home to Lillie Langtry (King Edward VII's mistress) and the hangout of bohemian Oscar Wilde (proir to his arrest here in 1895). So the place is steeped in fascinating, high-profile history. Sadly, the only indiscretion to be found nowadays are the banned portable telephones and computers in the public rooms. Still, the hotel's restaurant Mes'anges is a deluxe brasserie, opening out onto smart SW3 Pont Street. Small but perfectly formed, the setting here is both convivial and characterful at the same time. Residents and local diners alike warm to the ornate decor - all antique glass chandeliers, original plasterwork and old marble fireplaces. The Cadogan's menu might also be one of London's better-kept secrets. The traditional treats on offer include red mullet and scallop mille feuill, and rack of lamb and stuffed roast guinea fowl. The wine list is similarly smart but accessible, and very well-priced for what is usually an expensive area.
