Adam Reid at The French perfectly marries the old and the new and is a dining experience to be remembered. While the restaurant is steeped in history, the current menu offers modern British food that delivers consistently excellent flavours using only the very best seasonal produce available.

The restaurant offers outstanding levels of service, warmth and style that in turn, create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere like no other in Manchester. Guests can choose from 6 or 9 course tasting menus and wine flights, offering supremely elegant tasting journeys.

The French boasts 4 AA rosettes and features in the Good Food Guide 2017 at Number 18, the only restaurant in the Greater Manchester area to make it into the top 50 of the prestigious guide. The French also ranked 79th in The National Restaurant Awards 2016.

Located in Manchester City Centre, The French is 8 minutes’ walk from Manchester Oxford Road Rail Station.

    The menu gives little away. Instead of asking for some minor clarification of a dish, the whole menu needed clarification. Also the small plates experience is still relatively unusual in the UK, so guidance on the size of dishes and thus how much to order, was needed - not to be told that more can be added later if still hungry - some of us like to eat dishes in a particular order. A second visit would be easy, of course.
    Taking an order for 9 pre-dessert dishes without notes is only impressive if all the dishes turn up to order. We only got 8 with one the 'mains' missing. It turned out to be enough food anyway as we were ordering desert. The drinks and petit fours that followed were not billed to us in recognition of the mistake which was a nice touch. The choice of wine by the glass is limited, at least at a reasonable price. However, what we had was fine and the sommelier was friendly, helpful and efficient. The rest of the service was also friendly but no more.
    We went for the food. The star of the show was mixed. The spreads with the bread could have done without the salt crystals. We liked the prawn and scallop nibbles a lot. The eel starter was good but the cauliflower and the pasta starters were very salty - enough for us to tell the waiter. The cod and the duck mains were tasty. The rhubarb dessert was a winner but the Florentine one a disappointment - but maybe that's just a personal taste thing. It was not at all what had been anticipated - but that takes us back to the unhelpful menu.
    Another point we took up with the poor waiter was the serving of the snacks and the petit fours on beds of rice and seeds. It might look attractive but it's unhygienic and/or wasteful. Fingers inevitably touch the stuff so using it again seems dubious but then throwing it all away seems very wasteful. Surely an alternative presentation would be better.
    If we are critical it is because this restaurant is rated one of the best in Manchester so high standards are expected.

    Overall,excellent.I was slightly bemused,by what was called "salted duck" .Many years ago Michel Guerard,in his book,produced a "Duck Breast Ham",made by salting duck breast,wrapping in muslin,and hanging for a couple of weeks in a cool,dry place (my cellar !) I did this,and had it sliced on a machine,and it was almost like Parma Ham - went well with Melon. I thought that was what the "salted duck" was going to be: instead,it was just a slice of cooked duck breast!
    What was disappointing was the Cocktail Bar in the Octagon Court: no Lillet Blanc,no Absinthe,and the Bar person did not know what a "Corpse Reviver 2" was. this is a very old Cocktail,dating back to the 30's

    Great atmosphere - particularly liked the music. Good friendly staff were very helpful. Stand out dishes for me - smoked eel, pig trotter, rhubarb. I thought the duck wasn't that impressive - I didn't like the texture of the dish - the crunchy elements in the slow cooked leg part didn't do it for me. Overall - excellent and we will be back.

    When we arrived on the Saturday lunch time there was an indian wedding taking place in the hotel lobby with the banging of the drums and it was extremely noisy. However, the drums didn't last long and it did seem to settle down. The restaurant is small and comfortable with plenty of space between the tables and the tables are large for two people. The service as you would expect is very attentative. There is a good range of wines starting at from around £40. Other than the noisy lobby, the other problem I have is that on a Saturday the only choice is the taster menu. I realise that that the idea of this is for the restaurant to showcase what they can do. However, I rarely like taster menu food. The food was pleasant rather than amazing. I generally found it far too rich and unusual. I know that Manchester probably needs this restaurant because there are only two restaurants cooking at this level in the city but I would not eat here again - but that is just me. I'm glad I tried it though.

    The food was excellent and the service was fabulous. I had the wine flight also and the somalier was very informative. The decor is lovely and the restaurant well set out. The waiters were very attentive and were very accommodating with one of our party who needed their menu tailoring to suit their needs

    from walking in to the restaurant it was amazing, from the atmosphere to the Deco it was just incredible!! .. We was then seated in a booth and greeted with a glass of champagne and a birthday card from the French team for Adams birthday, which was such a lovely surprise. We was looked after from start to finish. Couldn't fault one single thing. And the food was just on another level!!! AMAZING! Perfect presentation and deliscous! .. and we ended on the golden empire. WOW!
